How to Make Money from WordPress

WordPress is the most popular blog platform on the Internet, with both an online hosted version and a downloadable self installation version available. According , about 79% of blogs use WordPress. With its wide adoption, there’s a big opportunity for earning money with WordPress.

Earning from Wordpress falls into two categories. The first is using WordPress as it is intended and creating a website or blog from it, then monetizing that blog to earn money. The second is tapping into the vast market for programming, designing and customizing websites or blogs for WordPress. If you have design and/or programming skills, you can tap into the huge number of site owners using WordPress and address their various needs.

Here are ways you can make money from WordPress:

1. Starting your own WordPress blog. The first way to earn from WordPress is to use it for what it is intended – for creating and running a blog.

The main way blogs can earn money is through displaying ads, whether banner ads, text ads, and other forms of advertising.  Google Adsense  and Chitika  are two of the best ad networks today where publishers with WordPress blogs or websites can apply to earn money from displaying ads.

You can also earn money through internet marketing, or helping WordPress users market and promote their blogs or websites on the Web.

For more ideas on how to earn from blogs, read the post “How to Earn Money from Blogging”

2. Programming and Designing a WordPress blog or website. Website owners and bloggers using WordPress have a wide variety of needs, particularly at the creation of their websites or blogs.

  • Designing templates for WordPress. There are businesses out there that focus on creating themes or templates for WordPress. If you have a real knack for programming and designing, you can make good money creating paid WordPress themes. An example is Studiopress, which offers individual themes starting at $59.95, or the pro-plus all-theme package for $249.95 that gives you access to all their themes plus support. However, to succeed in this business, you need to keep up with the changes of WordPress, constantly offer great-looking templates for your customers, and be proactive in assisting customers with their themes. Studiopress has an active forum where customers ask questions about theme customizations, and the developers as well as freelance programmers working on their themes respond to the inquiries.
  • Customizing themes and templates for WordPress. If you don’t want to become the next Studiopress, you can make money by working with these theme creators to customize their themes based on clients’ preferences.  Customization work include tweaking the theme design according to the page features and elements the clients want, changing the colors, or even taking the layout to the next level.StudioPress, for example, has a list of Recommended Designers who are all freelance programmers and web designers with proven track records of working with StudioPress themes. Customers can contact and hire any of these designers to help with any customization work that they need on the StudioPress themes that they have purchased.
    • Designing headers. A key element in the design of a blog or a website is its header. There are WordPress site owners who will use the templates as is, but want a customized header to give their website or blog that stamp of individuality and uniqueness. Custom headers can go anywhere from $100 to $500, or even more, depending on the complexity and design of the header.
    • Converting existing website or blog to WordPress. You can also make money by helping those currently running their blog or website on a different platform convert to WordPress. Potential customers include those running Blogger and other blog platforms, those who have a static website wishing to convert to a database driven site using WordPress, and those running other content management systems such as Drupal or Joomla. Majority of the work will be in moving the content, redirecting the URLs, and search engine-proofing the new WordPress site to prevent loss of traffic and rankings.
    • Adding ecommerce functionality to WordPress. WordPress is primarily a blog platform, but with tweaking and the use of plugins, many small business owners are using their WordPress-driven sites into ecommerce stores.
    • Creating or customizing WordPress plugins. Plugins extend the functionality of WordPress in almost limitless ways. You can create plugins for WordPress, customize plugins to work with the clients’ blogs or websites, or configure the plugin to ensure compatibility with other plugins being used. A recent job posting in eLance for $1,000-$5,000 is looking to hire a programmer who can create an advanced banner plugin for WordPress in order to segment text and banner ads.

25 Ways to Get Links to your Blog

If you know anything about blogging, you know that you want to get other people on the Internet to link back to your blog. That’s because this increases the traffic that comes to your blog. It does this through exposing your link to a greater number of people. It also does this through the fact that your blog will have more credibility with search engines if it has links to it from other sites. So you know that you’re supposed to get other blogs to link to yours. But how do you do it?

Here are twenty five basic ways to get backlinks to your blog:

1. Write great content. People who like what you have to say on your blog will probably link to it eventually.

2. Ask other bloggers for link exchanges. This sometimes works although it’s getting less common.

3. Comment on the blogs of others. This will encourage them to notice your blog and give links back to you.

4. Do reviews on your site. Review indie movies, folk musicians, local businesses or anything else that’s interesting to you but small enough to get attention back from those folks. A favorable review will get linked to by the people you reviewed.

5. Submit your blog to social bookmarking sites such as Digg and Mixx.

6. Add your blog URL to your profiles on social networking sites such as MySpace and LinkedIn. This gets it some attention and can lead to backlinks from people on those sites.

7. Link to yourself. If you write for any other blogs or websites, include links back to your own blog whenever it’s appropriate to do so. You can write articles and submit them to article submission sites to achieve the same purpose.

8. Offer an incentive. Post an announcement on your blog that you’ll give some link love to anyone that links to your blog. Or run a giveaway contest for the site who links back to you the most times in a week.

9. Give some link love for free. Link love just means that you create a post that links to a bunch of other posts on the web. Many bloggers compile a “link love” list of 10-40 links on a once per week basis. These links out often lead to links in.

10. Use a service that gets you backlinks. You have to pay for these but you usually get what you pay for. Do your research to make sure that you’re working with a legitimate company.

11. Use interviews on your site. Whenever you interview someone, you gain a reader (the person interviewed) who is likely to link back to that interview in order to promote themselves to others.

12. Regularly increase your own blogroll. When you link to others, they’re more likely to link to you. Add new sites (related to yours by topic) to your blogroll on a regular basis.

13. Post on Craigslist or similar sites for guest bloggers. There are other bloggers out there who are happy to write for you especially if it means that they get to promote that writing and get a link back to their own blog. You benefit because they’ll promote that post and link to it.

14. Write a press release. If you can write a great press release about some aspect of your work, submit it to press release sites and people will link to it.

15. Submit your blog to blog directories. If people can’t find you, they can’t link to you.

16. Put an RSS feed on your blog. People are more likely to come back to it again and again if they can subscribe to it. The more they come, they more likely they are to find something they want to link to.

17. Use BlogRush. This service distributes your post titles across multiple blogs.

18. Participate in forums related to your blog topic. Many let you include your URL link in your automatic signature.

19. Add a “link to me” button on your site. You don’t see these often but they do exist. Sometimes people who wouldn’t think about linking to you on their own will decide to go ahead and do it when they see the button.

20. Learn and use PayPerClick Advertising. You advertise yourself to people who would have a strong interest in your blog topic. The higher percentage of people who come to your site that actually have an interest in the topic, the higher percentage of links you’re going to get out of it.

21. Respond to every comment that you get. People who write to you want to know that you’re listening. When you do, you get loyal readers and they end up eventually linking to you because they like you.

22. Create a wiki or glossary for your topic. This is a resource that, if done well, everyone in the same industry will want to link to.

23. Become an Amazon reviewer. You don’t get money but you can get links back to your blog. And you can review anything that you’re already reading or listening to anyway so it’s fairly easy.

24. Ask questions. Always ask a question in your posts so that people are encouraged to get involved in a conversation on your site. If the conversation gets heated, you’re likely to get some attention to it in the form of links.

25. Create a “why you’d want to link to me” page for your blog. List a bunch of great reasons and you’ll encourage people to go ahead and make that link.

Ultimately, getting backlinks boils down to a few basic things. You need to have something on your site that people will find worthy of linking to. And you need to be willing to get active in online networking so that you can get the attention of those people who have blogs that can link to yours. Within these basics, there are lots of little things that you can do to get backlinks. The more creative that you are, the better those links are likely to be.

It all boils down to the following- any internet – related phenomenon will always be a source of great mystery to some. Thus, you need to learn more about it. Making a conscious effort towards acquiring this information will go a long way in helping you embrace that phenomenon – if you are interested in doing so. Other wants to share with everyone what he or she has to tell. Blogging is a huge business and multiple websites offer free blog hosting. Furthermore, many companies elect blogging as an inexpensive alternative to advertise their products or services. If your blog is not update on a regular basis, you will lose your readers to another blog site. Leave cool comments about their site and invite them to your site. If you have mutual interests and an identical type of readers, you can even share your blog links on your site. This helps everyone. Your reader will appreciate attractive reading while you make the most of readers from the other site.

3. Understand who reads your blogs

Another great alternative to keep blog readers coming back for more is to comprehend who reads your blog and write content that is direct towards them. This does not mean that you have to write on only one particular subject. If you are a stay at home mom and write about your life at home with the kids, your loyal readers may not appreciate it if you write about innovative topics or use loads of foul language in your writing. If you mostly write humor, do not bog your readers down with sorrowful woes and tales. Your readers will be interested in the things that attracted them to your site in the first place. That is normally what you are more interested in writing about. You can gain a better understanding of your readers interested by this includes places for comments and encouraging your readers to contact you by email.

4. Include keywords

You can gain readership and help keep your ongoing readers by this includes certain keywords in your blog. If you have entered your blog on a search engine, the keywords that refer to your blog will come up after a search. This is a great alternative to get readers interested in your blog. This is also a good way for companies to boost the traffic to their blog.

Blogging is the new alternative to keep a calendar or journal online. Blogging is increasingly generalizing for companies further. If what you want is to make your blog stand out against the thousands of other blogs, keep your readers interested and coming back for more everyday by updating your writing, take part in online communities, comprehend your readers and include keywords.
